Until the nineteenth century the term 'township' was used to denote an administrative area which was a subset of a parish. This map uses the townships as detailed in the Victoria County History of Lancashire, and these townships were all part of one of the parishes of Walton-on-the-Hill, Childwall, or Huyton, in turn were part of the Hundred of West Derby, which was one of six ancient administrative areas of Lancashire, and reached all the way to the Ribble around North Meols.
